Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy

Dark Light

Kids in the Hall are a Canadian sketch comedy group that formed in the 80s and had a show that ran for five years in Canada and the United States. Brain Candy was their first (and only) movie starring the cast that saw release in 1996. It’s become a cult favorite among their fans.

The soundtrack for the album was released through Matador, Liz’s label during the earlier part of her career—and most of the artists on this release were all on the Matador roster.

Liz contributed the track, “Six Dick Pimp,” an outtake from the WhipSmart recording sessions with Brad Wood.

“Six Dick Pimp” was one of the original songs recorded during Liz’s Girly-Sound days, appearing on the first tape, Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word To Ya Mutha (styled then as “6 Dick Pimp”). Later, the Girly-Sound version was officially released as part of the 2018 box set release, Girly-Sound to Guyville.

Reception

While the film received mixed reviews, the soundtrack fared better. AllMusic wrote:

Like the movie it supports, the soundtrack to the Kids in the Hall’s film debut Brain Candy is an off-kilter, eclectic, wildly uneven2699e3 but enjoyable collection. With the exception of three songs from the Kids in the Hall, the album is filled with some of the biggest names in ’90s indie-rock, from Pavement and Stereolab to Guided By Voices and Pizzicato Five, with a couple of Canadian bands thrown in for good measure (after all, the Kids are from Canada). Though Brain Candy is far from consistent, the best moments on the album are wonderful and nearly all of the tracks are rare or previously unreleased. From the infectious pop of Pavement’s “Painted Soldiers” and Matthew Sweet’s “Happiness,” to Stereolab’s gorgeous, layered “How to Play Your Internal Organs Overnight” and the glitzy disco revivalism of Pizzicato Five, Brain Candy has enough first-rate moments to justify its purchase.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

Lyrics

The six dick pimp is just doing his job
Making sure that business isn’t going under
He’s got the studs lined up in their stalls
Put a couple of bills in, you see six minutes of balls

Justine has got a plastic baggie on her dick
Cherry’s got a couple Prince Alberts through her prick
And nobody’s in number four and number six
Put a couple bills in, man, you really shouldn’t miss it

I don’t care how much time it takes
I don’t care what kind of money he makes
I just want my honey back
I’ll be on my way
You’re gonna gimme my boyfriend back

You thought you were smart
Thought I wouldn’t leave home
You rented a car, and now you’re halfway to Idaho
You thought you were smart
Thought I’d leave you alone
But you have no idea what kind of hell is coming down on you

I don’t care how much time it takes
I don’t care what kind of money he makes
I just want my honey back
I’ll be on my way
You’re gonna gimme my boyfriend back
You’re gonna gimme my boyfriend back

The six dick pimp is just doing his job
Making sure that business isn’t going under
He’s got the studs lined up in their stalls
Put a couple bills in, man, you really shouldn’t miss it
