Hey Lou

Dark Light

“Hey Lou” was the second official single that was released from Liz’s seventh album, Soberish, but the first from which Phair debuted a corresponding music video.

The song is tribute to the late Velvet Underground frontman, Lou Reed, and Laurie Anderson—and ponders what their life together as a couple was like from the perspective of Anderson.

“Hey Lou” imagines a day in the life of two music legends, whose union was an inspiration for rock bands and a source of curiosity for die-hard romantics.

Lyrics

What’s inside that heavy head?
Are you on the junk again?
Your eyes look dead
But your mouth keeps moving on, and on

We’re losing all of our friends
Pretty soon it’s going to be just you and me across the table

(Hey Lou!)
Hey Lou, are you feeling alright
(Hey Lou!)
Whatcha wanna do?
Are we stayin’ all night?

No one knows what to think
When you’re acting like an asshole
Spilling all the drinks
Talking shit about Warhol — again

Who is that fool in the den?
I’m not running a zoo here
Tell me now, what can we do?

(Hey Lou!)
Hey Lou, are you feeling alright?
(Hey Lou!)
Whatcha wanna do?
Is he staying all night?

(Hey Lou!)
Hey Lou, are you feeling alright?

You told me you had wings
Flying high on Fifth Avenue

How did that work out for you?
How did that work out for you?
How did that work out for you?
How did that work out for you?

O Superman
I’ve done as much as I can
You’re not the life of the party

(Hey Lou!)
Hey Lou, are you feeling alright?
(Hey Lou!)
Whatcha wanna do?
Are we staying all night?

(Hey Lou!)
Whatcha wanna do?
I can see the daylight again
